LEVEL: EASY. PROGRAM NEEDED: 3D studio MAX 4.2 Author: [ PrinceSnoopy ]

[ comment ]

Ever wondered how to do those awesome glows in max? Well, this teaches you how to create a simple glow, which you can build upon. As with the last tutorial, this tutorial may have been written by me [ PrinceSnoopy ] , but only under the guidance of +7thsign.

[ step 1 ]

Reset the scene (File>Reset>Yes)

[ step 2 ]

Make a texture for it by clicking the button

[ step 3 ]

Select your material by clicking on the box with the sphere in it that you are using, and change the to . (You have to hold it down to get the menu)
:

[ step 4 ]

Apply the texture to the sphere you created by pressing , and then close the material editor.

[ step 5 ]

Open Video Post (Rendering>Video Post...)

[ step 6 ]

Add a Scene Event by clicking , and enter in your view (Perspective or camera), and clicking Ok.

[ step 7 ]

Add an Image Filter Event by clicking .

[ step 8 ]

From the pull-down, click on Lens Effects Glow, then click on the Setup... button.

[ step 9 ]

To see what your glow looks like at any time, press the Preview button on the top left, right below the imagebox. Here, you can go off of this tutorial or keep going, as you are in the glow effects setup dialog. If you do choose to end the tutorial here, be sure to look at steps 13 through 15.

[ step 10 ]

Click on the Preferences tab, then change the size to 2 (default is 10.0), and change the color to Gradient (You can edit the colors of the glow in the Gradients tab)

[ step 11 ]

Now, go to the Inferno tab, Click the Blue and Red boxes on the right (They are on the top right in the Settings frame)

[ step 12 ]

Click Ok to get out of the setup.

[ step 13 ]

Click on the little running man, which looks like this: .

[ step 14 ]

Unless you are making this for animation, change the Time Output to Single.

[ step 15 ]

Choose your size and Render! Remember, the first image that comes out will NOT have the Video Post in it! Wait for the second image to render.

[ step 16 ]

To see what your piece will look like when rendered in the setup, go back to the glow setup (Double Click the Lens Effects Glow you made>Setup), and hit the VP Queue button. Hit Update whenever you want to, well, update the image!

[ step 17 ]

That's it! Mess around with the numbers and different options to see what you can come up with. Here are my final renders using different glow types:
